The Pays du Dropt, an area to savour, is less than one hour’s drive from Bordeaux. The Dropt river flows through the north west of the Lot-et-Garonne, passing under arched bridges, from bastide to bastide, at the foot of vineyards and castles. An undulating, green and luminous area singled out by 800 years of history and “appellation” wines among the oldest of France.

At each step the Pays du Dropt plunges you into medieval history. Starting point: Duras, a charming village dominated by a superb castle, a Major Site of Aquitaine. Duras is renowned for one of the best wines of the South-west, "the most secret of the large winegrowing areas".

Travelling further along, the church of Allemans-du-Dropt is well worth a detour as it contains impressive XVth century frescos and Lauzun proposes its elegant castle. On the road of the “bastides” (medieval towns) along the Dropt, do not miss Miramont-de-Guyenne and its labyrinth of alleyways, Castillonnès and its pretty central square surrounded by arcades and finally, Villeréal, one of the most beautiful medieval towns of the Lot-et-Garonne with its superb wooden covered market and its imposing fortified church. Villeréal is particularly pleasant to discover on Saturday morning market day.
